Deepika Padukone Turns Bengali
After her bikini act in the latest blockbuster ‘Housefull’, Deepika Padukone is all set to undergo an image makeover for Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.’ The long-legged lass will be seen in a new avatar, wearing a traditional Bengali saree, while playing a Bengali revolutionary. Deepika’s look has been designed by Bollywood stylist Neeta Lulla.
A period film, ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ is based on Manini Chatterjee’s book ‘Do And Die’ and focuses on the 1930s Chittagong Uprising. Talking to a news daily on Deepika’s on-screen character, Ashutosh Gowariker said, “Deepika plays Kalpana Datta, one of my favourite characters in the movie. It showcases the grit and determination of the women of that time, when they were not allowed to participate in the freedom movement. But she braved the odds and took the gun in her hands to fight for the country.”
However, while performing some high action stunts in ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’, Deepika’s struggled to maintain her balance in a saree. A source said, “Deepika was required to do some action scenes in the film. But the saree was causing a lot of problems. Every time she took the gun to shoot, or run, the saree would come in the way. It was quite a funny situation and initially some retakes were required. But by the end, Deepika learnt how to handle the saree like a pro.”
Speaking on Deepika’s latest look, Neeta Lulla said, “We did our research for the character and accordingly draped her in the Bengali traditional manner. It is a single pallu drape, twice over the shoulder. When she was doing her action sequence, like any other normal saree, we tucked it around her waist.” Source
