Maximum Movie Review

Cast: Sonu Sood, Naseeruddin Shah, Neha Dhupia, Vinay Pathak, Amit Sadh

Directed by Kabeer Kaushik

Rating: *

Music Director: Amjad Nadeem

Contrary to popular belief, this film isn’t about a nighty-clad mother (maxi-mum). It is about Aamchi Mumbai- the maximum city. But director Kabeer Kaushik’s film takes minimum interest in Suketu Mehta’s interpretation of the city and if anything, only curdles it into a milkshake of clichés. So Mumbai isn’t about the ‘Mum-bhais’ anymore. It’s about trigger-happy encounter cops, dance bars which can’t be distinguished from item song shoots and a lot of people lying mum in a pool of their own blood; pretty much like the theatre screening this film.

Pratap Pandit (Sonu Sood) is an encounter cop of few words and many bullets. A family man by every right, he is sorely disappointed when his wife- Supriya (Neha Dhupia) succumbs to a bullet later in the film. That said, unlike every self-respecting family man, he is a regular at dance bars and has his way with item girls who want police protection. So he’s a good cop, full-time fop and a mediocre pop. Anyway, his popularity leads to professional jealousy among ATS (Anti-terrorist Squad) cop Arun Inamdar (Naseeruddin Shah), his boss and chelas. This is soon followed by some confusion about how the Crime branch is trying to hog all the limelight from the ATS and how the two departments do pretty much the same thing (and they don’t mean making merry with public funds). But the commissioner wants them to go on doing what they do best, so Inamdar and Pandit go on a shooting spree, killing gangsters, informers, random people, extras on the set, some assistant directors, the script-writer (oh no! he escaped since he never showed up).

The story of Maximum takes you back to the year 2003 in Mumbai where the local police had satrted a war against the dominating underworld. The command has been given in the hands of two potential and brave police officers Pratap Pandit (Sonu Sood) and Arun Inaamdar (Naseeruddin Shah) to eradicate crime from the city. The story revolves around these two police officers, their way of handling the task and their struggle for ‘maximum’ power. Both the officers show contradictory characters with Pandit (Sonu Sood) being ambitious and Inaamdar (Naseeruddind) conniving and silent. Both the officers engage in their self-defeating turf war which leads to a dramatic conflict between the both. The climax of the movie is a bit unpredictable.

Pandit’s wife (Neha Dhupa) is killed by his rivals in the climax.
The film does not prove worth due to lack of a proper plot and storyline that fails to keep the interest of the audiences going. Talking about the performances, Naseeruddin Shah as an encounter specialist is as usual the element of the movie justifying his character to the best while Sonu Sood has also made his appearance noted with less but intense dialogue delivery and too many bullets speaking for him. Neha Dhupia, who is playing Pandit’s wife in the movie, looks pretty in the traditional outfits as a housewife. Vinay Pathak plays Tiwari, an Uttar-Bharatiya neta, looks has justified his role as a politician. Amit Sadh as a reporter is quite impressive in his role.

Bollywood’s Raw Action is much Better than Technological Action

After the success of Akshay Kumar‘s Rowdy Rathore everybody has believed that who ever does the action in Silver Screen, no one is better than Khiladi. He is the real Khiladi in B-Town.

Advanced technology can make actors fly in the air, jump down high-rises and do other dazzling, dangerous stunts. But it is the old Bollywood ‘dhishoom, dhishoom’ staple that really sets the viewer’s adrenaline rushing – borne out by the success of “Rowdy Rathore”, another raw action entertainer that has earned over Rs.105 crore.

“Dabangg”, “Singham” and “Agneepath” had their fair share of raw action and all did brisk business, earning Rs.145 crore, Rs.139 crore and Rs.120 crore, respectively.

There are many more films like Salman Khan‘s Wanted and John Abraham‘s Force which also fall under same league of films with tough and strong male leads, who make villains count stars with their kicks and punches. End result? The viewers hooted, clapped, whistled and came back for more.

Clearly, hi-tech entertainers made with mega-budgets like underwater thriller “Blue” and sci-fi “Krrish” and “RA.One” have their place, but the masses, particularly those in the interiors, want raw, rugged action.

Agrees Bollywood’s ‘khiladi’ Akshay Kumar, who returned to action with the Rs.45 crore-worth “Rowdy Rathore” after six years.

“I personally believe that people enjoy raw action more than technology. If you use too much of technology, it will bounce back. People are very smart and understand what is real and what is unreal,” Akshay told

“If you sit in single theatres and watch such films with the audience, you will hear people saying, ‘Arre ye toh computer pe kiya hai (This is done on computer)’. You can’t take your audiences for granted. So when I did my first action film ‘Rowdy Rathore’ after six years, I chose to do raw action. I believe in manpower and not technological power,” he said.

The success of “Rowdy Rathore”, which grossed over Rs.100 crore within two weeks of its release, ratifies his belief.

According to film critic Omar Qureshi, nothing works without a good story.

“Essentially, Bollywood is about songs, dance and drama. In between, our filmmakers were copying straight from Hollywood. They have a different style of filmmaking, which does not really connect with the rawness of our interiors,” Qureshi told

“People go to a theatre to be entertained. Today there are all sorts of action scenes – live action and special effects-created scenes. It’s not true that live action entertains better,” Khan told

“Dabangg 2″, “Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2″ and “Shootout At Wadala” are amongst the upcoming films showing plenty of the tried and tested ‘dhishoom’ formula. And the makers are hoping that they will be laughing all the way to the bank.

But above all of them is Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger. The recent trailer of the movie has proved that Salman Khan is back with a bang.

Katrina Kaif Is The Lead actress In Rajneeti Sequel

Prakash Jha is planning a sequel for his blockbuster Rajneeti. This time around, Katrina will take center stage as the story will completely revolve around her character’s rise and fall. However, Ranbir was apparently not too pleased to play second fiddle and opted out of the film.

Prakash Jha confirmed the news to TOI, “It is very challenging to take the Raajneeti story forward. Most of the main characters are dead. Two-thirds of the characters will be completely new. Katrina will have a central role. And though Ranbir’s character didn’t die at the end of Rajneeti, he won’t be part of Rajneeti 2. Again, I will be doing a spin on the Mahabharat, though this time, it will be completely different.”

The rumor has it that Ranbir backed out of the project as he did not want to play a side kick to Katrina in the movie but we never know!

For the original, Katrina Kaif not only brushed up her Hindi but also tried to get rid of her heavily anglicized accent. Kat did manage to pull off lengthy Hindi dialogues and gave her best performance in the film. Prakash Jha was very happy with the actress’ effort, and wished to work with her again.

It is learnt that the sequel of Raajneeti will again be a spin on the Mahabharat, but this time, it will be completely different, claims Prakash Jha.

Jism 2′s Selected Songs Will Be Shown On Tv

Filmmaker Pooja Bhatt has chosen to promote “Jism 2″ songs with adult content through internet, “a more than worthy competitor of TV”, rather than showing them on television channels.

She has made it clear that she would release her songs on the internet and will at no cost compromise on the visual content of the songs. The filmmaker took to Twitter again to write, “We have 6 songs in #Jism2. Only 3 cater to a universal audience without losing their essence. The other 3 cannot be made to seem asexual!(sic).”

It looks like the 3 songs Pooja is talking about have tremendous sexual undertone. “Hence we will only submit to the censor board & plug on TV those songs of Jism2 what we feel is appropriate for a family audience(sic),” Pooja added.

“Delighted that Tseries is in absolute agreement with us with regards to NOT releasing watered down versions of ‘Jism 2′ trailers on TV. This is the FIRST time a mainstream film has chosen the internet and social media as a MORE than worthy competitor to television,” she added.

The actress-turned-director, who went behind the camera for the first time in 2003 for “Paap”, says she is happy being different.

And added, “This is the FIRST time a mainstream film has chosen the Internet & social media as a More than worthy competitor to Television. Jism2(sic).”

Saahil Prem will be launched by Shahrukh Khan

It seems that the two rival Khans, Salman and Shahrukh, of Bollywood might be at loggerheads but their mind works in same direction.

Few months ago we saw Salman Khan actively promoting Bittoo Boss’ actor Pulkit Samrat, by attending many events related to his film and even was heard to have given him few tips that would help him to find better place in Bollywood.

Grapevine is abuzz that SRK saw a few glimpses of the film Someday, said to be India’s first-ever dance flick, and decided to lend his support to the newcomer and also produce the film under his banner Red Chillies. It will now feature an all new global stature with techniques like locking and popping, b-boying, shadow dance, finger tutting and wacking.
