Varun Dhawan, who made his debut with Karan Johar’s ‘Student Of The Year’ in 2012, is all set for a bigger career boost this year. Producer Ekta Kapoor shelled out 2 crore for the Hindi remake rights of a Telugu blockbuster, which she’s making with the youngster under the aegis of his filmmaker father, David Dhawan. Interestingly, a number of producers and actors were vying for its rights, but Ekta, being the determined producer she is, stayed back down South till she closed the deal.
Kapoor shelled out 2 crores for the Hindi remake rights of a Telugu blockbuster, which she’s making with the youngster and is also teaming up with the Junior Dhawan’s father David Dhawan for this venture.
“An established actor wouldn’t get the youth and the young girls’ craze that we want. Varun is like a young Salman Khan, he fits the bill perfectly. He’s comfortable with humor, his acting is very good and he’s a wonderful dancer, too.”
Ekta is optimistic that Varun will set a trend with his attitude and style. “And besides Ranbir Kapoor, no other young actor is being emulated. Varun will surely be the next,” she asserts. Equally positive is David, who feels this is a wonderful movie for his younger son. He says, “Varun is a very aggressive actor, he has that passion and goes all out with his performances. He’s a good dancer, good in romantic scenes and convincing in emotional parts. In short, he delivers all that is expected of a Hindi film hero.”

Karan Johar’s not so anticipated ‘Student of the Year’ seems to have hit gold at the box office. The sleeper movie, without any stars has collected about Rs 28.43 crore (Rs 8.98cr on Friday, Rs 9.36 cr on Saturday and Rs 10.09 cr on Sunday) at the box office in its first weekend.
Karan Johar has the stars, Alia Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter), Varun Dhawan (David Dhawan’s son) and Siddharth Malhotra bound by a contract where they could not sign any other film until they complete SOTY.
Meanwhile, OMG continues its dream run, bringing in Rs 75.44 crore till Sunday night in its fourth week. English Vinglish is Rs 29.56 crore after its third weekend.

Alia Bhatt is the new name in B-Town and being the lead actress of Karan Johar‘s Student Of The Year, she has been promoting the film with much gusto. However, this sudden spate of promotion spree has taken a toll on the young actress. In fact Alia recently fainted on the sets of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, while promoting her film.
Alia was on the show with the two lead actors of her upcoming film Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan and was performing to the song ‘Disco Deewane’, when she fainted. Apparently, the high energy dance involving plenty of swirls and twirls was the clincher as towards the end of the act, Alia missed her balance but somehow managed to get herself back on her feet. However soon after, she collapsed due to the over exertion. On seeing his leading lady collapse, Karan Johar who is also a judge on the show, rushed to her aid. The shoot was stalled for an hour and resumed only once Karan was sure that Alia was fine and ready to resume shooting.

It was only few days ago filmmaker Karan Johar revealed he has learnt a lot about life from Shahrukh Khan. But if you think it was just KJo, who has got the Bollywood’s superstar’s lessons, then we’re afraid that you might be wrong.
Well, we all know that Karan has helped his newcomers of Student of the Year a lot with the acting lessons and has worked really hard on them. But you must not know that Karan wasn’t the only teacher as sources recently found out that SRK also doled out some special tips to a new bunch of students in B-town.
Yeah, we’re talking about KJo’s discoveries — Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, who are making a debut this year. In a candid chat with a source, they revealed, “SRK might not have been on the sets, but he was there emotionally. Besides, he had given us so many acting tips when we were assisting Karan during My Name Is Khan. He knew we wanted to be actors, so he would take us aside after every scene and explain the nuances of the scene. It was great; he’s our mentor, in a way.”
Filmmaker Karan Johar’s ‘Student of The Year’ is set hit the theatres Oct 19 this year.
Co-produced by Johar’s Dharma Productions and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, the film will launch three new faces in the B-town – Alia, who is the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt, David Dhawan’s son Varun, and model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra – in prominent roles.
It is the first time that Johar is working with an all-new cast and is said to be excited about working with the new bunch of actors, because it reminds him of his initial days in the industry.
‘Karan’s been shooting in Bangkok for the past several weeks now and he’s expected to return sometime in the first week of May. He’s extremely excited to work with a bunch of newcomers and had been talking about their young energetic vibe, reminding him of his own days as a newcomer,’ a source said.
