Tabu declared in a tabloid chat, “I don’t feel the need to do every film that comes my way. I’m quite happy waiting for films that I find satisfying artistically and stimulating creatively. I’ve been through that phase where I did films purely for financial security and it’s easy to see which ones those were.”
Shuttling between Mumbai and Hyderabad (“I’ve always been Mumbai based, I got to Hyderabad, coz’ I have a house there too”), juggling South movies (“I did a special song in ‘Prithviraj’ only for Santosh Sivan”) and Hindi cinema, the actress who scored with ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘The Namesake,’ states that “I’ve always followed my heart and lived on my own.”
Tabu, however, is quite tickled about rumours insisting that she’s been signed up by Madhur Bhandarkar for the sequel of ‘Chandni Bar’. “Not yet,” she clarifes. “Madhur knows me, he will approach me only if he has a role which I won’t be able to turn down.”
The superlative actress is readying to take a detour in the business of histrionics. “I’d love to direct someday and I’ve already considered it myself,” bares Tabu. “The day I get the right script, I’ll be ready to plunge into direction.” Source
The superstar Amitabh Bachchan spent a fun evening with his ‘Cheeni Kum’ co-star Tabu.
‘Tabu, the wonderful Tabu, dropped by in the evening. She had not met me for long and had just seen ‘Paa’ on DVD. So we talked and talked and talked on everything under the proverbial film related sun.
Films and directors, scripts and performances, present times and past times, actors and actresses, media and media. Endlessly… a delight,’ the actor posted on his blog.
In the 2007 movie ‘Cheeni Kum’, Tabu played a 30 plus woman who falls in love with a 67-year-old chef, played by Amitabh. Source
Tabu is just like a godgift to our film industry who has been contributing with her versatile acting even today. ‘Astitva’, Mahesh Manjrekar’s bold take on the Indian woman’s sexuality and mores did fetch a truckload of acclaim for Tabu and MM. A decade later, Manjrekar is braving up to unleash ‘White’, a bolder, more incisive take on the sexuality and identity of the middle class woman… with Tabu in the lead!
Reportedly, Tabu baulked when she was lavished with the script, as it has her leaving an insensitive cad of a hubby… and later, opting for a more caring younger man!
“It’s true that Tabu was quite shocked when she read the script,” confesses MM in a tabloid chat. “But I had written the script of ‘White’ with her in mind. I couldn’t think of anybody else who could play this startling woman who defies every norm in society to assert herself.”
Adds MM with a twinge of pride in his tone, “As a director, the thought of making ‘White’ gives me a real high. It is a look at the feelings, dreams and also the nightmares of an Indian housewife. And it will be more hard hitting than anything that has been attempted on the subject, on screen.” Source
Where her performance is concerned she is a dynamite onscreen. And although the National award winner is famed for her underplayed, yet dramatic histrionics, her return to cinedom after a yawning hiatus is sure to tickle collective funny bones.
Ramesh Taurani’s ‘Toh Baat Pakki’ illumines the Tabu in a comic role. And although she has giggled her bit in laugh riots such as ‘Chachi 420′, ‘ Hera Pheri’ and ‘Biwi No. 1′, it is Taurani’s flick which will showcase her comic timing to the fullest.
“My roles in those films were not necessarily funny, “avers the actress in a newspaper chat. “I agreed to do this film because I haven’t done a comedy for a long time. The role and script were fantastic, and everything about ‘Toh Baat Pakki’ felt right. Besides, the producers Tips Films told me that they shelve the film if I did not agree to do it. It’s hugely flattering for an actor to hear this.” Sharman Joshi and Vatsal Seth will team up with Tabu to raise those belly laughs in February.
Meanwhile, Marathi film writer director Kedar Shinde who helmed ‘Toh … has been over the moon gushing over Tabu in tabloids. “I’m grateful to Ramesh Taurani for giving me Tabu in my very first film. I loved working with her because apart from being hugely talented, she’s also very humble.” Notch one more devotee on Tabu’s gush list. Source
Tabu is best-known for acting in artistic, low-budget films that go on to garner more critical appreciation than substantial box office figures. Her appearances in commercially successful films were few, but impact was great, such as Border (1997), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Biwi No.1 and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999). Her most notable performances include Maachis (1996), Virasat (1997), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Astitva (2000), Chandni Bar (2001), Maqbool (2003) and Cheeni Kum (2007). Her leading role in Mira Nair’s American film The Namesake also drew major praise. Known to be selective about her film roles, she has said, “I do films which move me and most of all, the unit and the director should appeal to me.”
Currently she is working on Toh Baat Pakki, The Legend of Kunal Tishyarakshita, Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai. Today on her 38th birthday bollywood.ac wishes her all the luck in life.
Someone is really insecure of someone. News from the sets of All the Best is that after hearing the news of Tabu joining the crew, Bipasha Basu demanded to know why she wasn’t kept in the loop. The Bong Bombshell is jittery, as multi-heroine films like Ajnabee, Race, and Bachna Ae Haseeno didn’t do much for her. Now she’s worried that with powerhouse performer Tabu entering the cast, her role might suffer.
A birdie from Goa says, “Bips spoke to Ajay and told him that he can’t have Tabu in the climax. Initially, she was to be the main lead and now it is becoming a two-heroine project.”
But we are sure when they come face-to-face, the two actresses will smile and blow air kisses. Source
The scintillating diva Tabu has refused to turn young for director Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s historical film The Legend of Kunal which is about emperor Ashoka’s last days and his relationship with his son Kunal. While Amitabh Bachchan plays the emperor, Tabu plays his wife Tishyarakshitra.
For a flashback sequence in the film, Dwivedi wanted Big B and Tabu to look young and had even contacted make-up experts in Hollywood to make the two stars look half their age for the camera. However, Tabu surprised the director by refusing to look younger, even after the make-up experts said it could be done easily.
So now, Dwivedi is only left with the choice of roping in young actors who look like Tabu and Big B respectively. But the director is not worried because the flashback sequence is a small part of the film and the shooting will begin only by the end of this year. Source
It was the first day of the fashion extravaganza, The Lakme Fashion India Week. After all the glitters, all hell broke loose when the svelte Tabu walked in almost hand in hand with her ‘lover’ Nagarjuna.
While the whole world has been in the know about her relationship with the South star, Tabu has always been rather cold to the point of being rude to the media when it came to her beau.
Both Tabu and Nagarjuna were extremely rude to the media and refused to give any soundbytes. They were at the WFW for Asmita Marwah’s show. Source
Bollywood actress Tabu is all set for an image makeover. If the headstrong character of a girl in love with a septuagenarian in Cheeni Kum was bold, wait to see Tabu in Seasons Greetings. The movie has Tabu playing an ultra glamorous woman who tries to find happiness on her own after her husband abandons her.
Priyanka Chopra ‘s trusted designer Gaviin Miguel has been roped in to give Tabu a completely new look in the film. Gaviin has reportedly given Tabu a number of skin-revealing outfits like gowns, mid-length dresses with low necklines and bare backs. According to the designer, “Tabu has an amazing body and carries off dresses with great élan.”
A light-hearted comedy, ‘Seasons Greetings’ is directed by Vicky Chopra and co-produced by UTV. Source
Tabu has said yes to a big lavish historical, a bio-pic on the life of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka where she’ll play his all-powerful wife who brought the kingdom to its knees.
And playing her royal husband is none other than the Big. B…their second remarkable project together after Cheeni Kam.
Though they belong to totally different generations and have done a generation-challenged and challenging love story together, fate seems to have bonded Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu is a strange inextricable clasp.
Entitled The Legend Of Kunal the film is to be directed by Chandraprakash Diwedi. It will be produced by Mr Bachchan’s company AB Corp Ltd. Source
Tabu and Amitabh Bachchan were a treat to watch in the bitter sweet comedy Cheeni Kum. Finally, it seemed that there was an actress who could match the Big B.
Well, for all of those, who loved them, there is some good news ahead as the fussy actress has given the go ahead to director Balki to act in the sequel to Cheeni Kum, opposite the Big B. Tabu is known to be quite choosy and fastidious about her roles. But in recent times, the actress has signed two films, opposite the Big B. The first is Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s The Legend Of Kunal, based on the life of King Ashoka. Tabu will be playing the Emperor’s wife and the Emperor will be played by Bachchan himself.
The second film is Balki’s sequel. Balki will first have to complete Pa, which stars the Bachchans, father, son and daughter in law, Aishwarya. Cheeni Kum’s sequel is set for the year after next and the actress has been asked to keep herself free. Source
In Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s film on Emperor Ashoka, actress Tabu plays a sexually deprived woman.
Tabu’s role in the film has an explosive sexual connotation. In the words of director Chandraprakash Dwivedi , Tabu’s character in the film suffers from kama tanha, which is sexual isolation. “She’s unable to achieve sexual fulfillment. Desire when uncontrolled, plays havoc with the mind. That’s Tabu’s story,” Dwivedi is quoted as saying.
In the film, based on the relationship between emperor Ashoka and his son Kunal, Tabu is paired with Amitabh Bachchan . But she has a volatile sexual chemistry with Arjun Rampal, who plays Kunal.
This incestuous chemistry becomes all the more explosive because of a fourth character, that of Kanchanmala, Kunal’s pretty wife, to be played by Amrita Rao. Dwivedi says while Tabu’s character signifies “thirst”, Amrita’s character stands for “purity”. Source
